A social analysis meeting was held at the SRED office in Kallar, Arakkonam, Ranipet district. The meeting was presided over by SRED Coordinator Shanthi. The special guest was M.K. Edwin Prabhakaran, who spoke about the life of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy. He said that Periyar was born on September 17, 1879, into a wealthy family and was known for his honesty and trustworthiness. Even though he opposed the idea of God, a respected person entrusted him with the administration of a temple. Periyar married Nagamani Ammaiyar, who came from a poor family, despite his parents’ opposition, and later performed the marriage of a young widow, facing strong criticism from society. During a visit to Kashi, he was insulted by Brahmins, and afterward, he went to Andhra Pradesh, where he became a Congress leader. Mahatma Gandhi then sent him to Kerala to resolve the Vaikom problem, where he worked to end caste discrimination. After returning to Tamil Nadu, he started the Self-Respect Movement. The meeting was attended by more than 20 young people from the community. SRED staff member Saraswathi thanked all the participants.
