Promoting Food Sovereignty - Food festival

SRED along with Tamilnadu Dalit Women’s Movement,Tamilnadu Women’s Forum  and Dalit women farmer collectives organize  food festivals with an objective of giving natural, traditional, pesticide free food and to spend a day with women farmers to relax without stress. The aim is to create a day of wellbeing for activists.


Women farmers and activists prepare  raggi porridge, dry fish curry, spinach curry, pearl millet porridge, lime and sugar cane juice, sprouted millet salad, cucumber salad, rye grain sweet balls, ragi roti, banana flower vadai , chapatis, kuruma with organic vegetables, nanari sharbat, urad dal sweet porridge, boiled sweet potato balls, simile balls with nuts, seasame and jaggery sweet, lime rice, vegetable rice, mangoes, tender coconut, jamun fruits, boiled peanuts etc. The food is served in mud pots and fruits are served in bamboo baskets. There would be parai drum beating performance which is a Dalit folk Art.

Activists, academicians, media people, Government officials, trade unionists and leaders from Dalit and tribal villages take part in the event. There would be wider discussion on food sovereignty, pesticide free food, importance of millets, nutritious food for women and girls etc.



The movement campaigns for chemical free , healthy, nutritious and organically grown food.
